Click on an image to see it full-size: Developing Jhane Barnes Digital was a creative journey that took longer than a year and a half. While I first experimented with digitally printed garments in 1997, the designs in Jhane Barnes Digital are miles ahead of my original offerings. Perhaps most importantly, Jhane Barnes Digital consists primarily of engineered designs. This means that each element of a print coincides with a specific part of the garment, resulting in a unique synthesis between the garment and the fabric. To create an engineered garment, I had to design the style of the garment and the fabric at the same time. First, I asked my factories for a marker, which is a drawing of all of the pattern pieces of a garment laid out in the configuration in which fabric would be printed. It took several rounds of communication between me and the factories to ensure that I had the correct markers. Next, I had to proof each pattern, making subtle improvements. Finally, I had to figure out how to apply the digital images and motifs I had generated as fabric patterns to the garment markers. This was the most challenging part. Often, I would go through the process of carefully selecting elements of my digital fabric designs and placing them on the marker, only to decide later that I wanted to change one piece in the puzzle. When all of the fabric and pattern pieces need to fit together, changing one element often means starting over from scratch. Often, I would have to adjust most if not all of my pattern pieces even if my intent was to make a change to just one piece. The process of designing these engineered garments has been exceptionally challenging for me. It has also proven challenging for my sewing factories. Together, my mills, factories, and designers and I are learning how to achieve the look we want while using the least fabric and the least material resources possible. RheduxAs you may know, last spring I launched Rhedux, an environmentally conscientious line of shirts with a slimmer silhouette. Jhane Barnes Digital also has a trimmer fit and is environmentally beneficial. Digital printing is among the most environmentally friendly methods of printing available today. Furthermore, by engineering our fabric patterns, we have been able to use less fabric, thereby creating less waste, and reducing the cost of each garment. Each label color-coordinates with each piece, and is printed together with the garment! Jhane Barnes Digital offers cutting edge design at an exceptional value. |
