When I first made the announcement about my collaboration on Ohio Math
Works and other textbooks, the ho hum yawn about math and design was audible.
Can anyone make math more interesting?
The
good news is in! Students and educators agree with my original theory
that I would have loved math if it had been integrated into my real life.
In cooperation with Ohio Math Works, I worked very hard to improve the
way math is taught in the middle and high schools. The OMW curriculum
helped to create a teachers syllabus that not only informs, but
excites the students.
Heading the project is Joanne Grueter, a television producer at WCET
Cincinnatti. She reports, OMW is being taught in schools throughout
Ohio. An overwhelming majority of teachers have shown a lot of enthusiasm
and interest in the program. Educators believe the project increases students
motivation to learn math because of the very good examples of math concepts
and good exercises for practicing math problem solving with real-life
application. Teachers also like the kit for its interdisciplinary teaching
opportunities, integrating writing, reading and vocabulary development.
The Ohio Math Works project has been awarded and recognized with four
top industry awards.
