Jhane Introduces her Spring 2008 Collection
Hi, It's Jhane. My spring collection has just been added to my on-line store. Among these new designs, there are two I am particularly proud of. I love designing, and I also love sharing my "recipes" and creative process.
"Incite" is a double woven fabric with a push pull finish. This finishing technique causes yarns to wiggle on the surface, exposing a layer of threads underneath. While "Incite" has the appearance of a relatively simple pattern, I used a series of fairly complex mathematical systems to create this design. I began by exploring an aspect of my custom software called Queens, which allows me to arrange squares on an imaginary chessboard. In this "game" of chess, each square or queen can move horizontally, vertically, and diagonally, and no queen or square can ever eliminate another. I used Queens to create a digital canvas of squares. I then manipulated these squares using additional theoretical systems contained in my software. The resulting design with bold vertical and diagonal elements is almost like a diagram of the movement of chess pieces!
"Twirls" is a digital print containing hundreds of colors, which is unusual in fashion. This fabric is made in Japan on a special, commercial sized ink jet printer that prints on rolls of fabric. Creating a print with this many colors allows me to achieve a photographic look, and gives me freedom as a designer. I developed this design using special, mathematically based software called ArtMatic. I first discovered this software while on holiday break last year, and quickly became fascinated by its user interface, which is similar to a video game. Using ArtMatic is like being on an airplane and suddenly operating the controls - it's a lot of fun! The resulting intricate design of swirls and small tiles of color is certain to be as fun to wear as it was to make. Click on the names of the shirts above to see them. Zoom in to see the details! After reading the theories and processes behind these new shirts, I hope you will be even more excited to be among the first to wear them. - Jhane 2/2008 |
